Max Baer Jr., renowned for portraying Jethro Bodine in the classic TV comedy “The Beverly Hillbillies,” has led a diverse and intriguing life. Born on December 4, 1937, to boxing legend Max Baer and Mary Ellen Sullivan, Baer’s career extended beyond acting to include professional golf and ventures into producing and directing.
His breakthrough came with “The Beverly Hillbillies,” where Baer played the lovable Jethro Bodine. The show’s immense success did not translate into substantial earnings for Baer initially, with the cast receiving modest pay per episode. Following the series’ conclusion in 1971, Baer explored filmmaking, achieving success with movies like “Ode to Billie Joe” and “Macon County Line,” the latter becoming a surprise hit.
Apart from the entertainment industry, Baer entered the casino business, establishing the Beverly Hillbillies Gambler Casino in Las Vegas, later sold to new owners. His personal life includes a marriage to Joanne Hill from 1966 to 1971, a period during which they had no children. Post-divorce, Baer remained unmarried and faced personal tragedy in 2008 when his girlfriend, Chere Rhodes, passed away under tragic circumstances.
