“Michael J. Fox’s Tribute to His Mother: A Journey of Resilience and Positivity”

Actor Michael J. Fox Reflects on the Loss of His Mother and His Journey with Parkinson’s Disease

Michael J. Fox, known for his positive outlook despite his long battle with Parkinson’s disease, attributes this trait to his mother, Phyllis, who passed away in September at the age of 92.

Fox, now 61, fondly remembers his mother’s joyful spirit. “My mum had a long and fulfilling life,” he shared. “She was a lovely lady, always fair, and she loved to laugh.”

Phyllis was particularly concerned when Fox was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 1991 at the age of 29. At that time, he was actively working in television and film while building a family with actress Tracy Pollan, whom he married in 1988. They have four children: Sam, born in 1989; twin daughters Aquinnah and Schuyler, born in 1995; and their youngest, Esmé, born in 2001.

Fox recalls his mother’s curiosity about how he managed everything. “I told her, ‘I just go forward.’ I focus on what I can do rather than lamenting what I can’t. My mum was the same. She always saw the positives.”

Growing up, Fox and his four siblings were influenced by their parents, Phyllis and William. As a military family, they supported each other through various relocations. Phyllis, as a military wife, adeptly managed new environments, setting up homes and schools while working on the side.

Fox’s optimistic approach has helped him raise over $1.5 billion for Parkinson’s research through the Michael J. Fox Foundation. Despite recent challenges, including multiple fractures over the past year, Fox remains resilient. “I’m finally healing and feeling great,” he said. “Life is fascinating.”

In tough times, Fox remembers a principle he developed after a risky spinal cord surgery in 2018. “If I can find gratitude in any situation, it transforms the whole experience and opens the door to grace and potential good,” he explained. “I’m getting back into that groove, and it feels very good.”
